Copper thieves leave Wicker Park and Bucktown businesses powerless

Cut wires as shot by CBS Chicago

From December 16 to January 24, thieves have struck five businesses along Milwaukee Ave. from the 1600 North to the 2000 North block. Their target is copper wire. 

Copper can reap high rewards for thieves. This type of theft is not unusual in the area, where residents have had copper gutters and down spots as well as wiring ripped from homes. 

These commercial strip thieves cut the electric connection between the main outside electric service and the business. Then they steal the businesses copper wiring, leaving the business without electricity.

As reported by CBS Chicago, the businesses included the UPS Store, Corepower Yoga, Stop Along and CHI50. Hit twice, Corepower's financial cost is between $10,000 and $20,000. 

To date there is no description of the offender or offenders.

Incidents

  • 1600 block of N. Milwaukee Ave., Dec. 16 between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
  • 1700 block of N. Milwaukee Ave., Jan. 11 at 5:34 a.m.
  • 1800 block of N. Milwaukee Ave., Jan. 19 between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.
  • 1700 block of N. Milwaukee Ave., Jan. 23 at 5:15 a.m.
  • 2000 block of N. Milwaukee Ave., Jan. 24 between 3:40 a.m. and 4:16 a.m.

  • Call 911 immediately and provide a detailed description of the offender(s) including any vehicle description and license plate information
