Lowe's to replace Kmart in Centrum's Wicker Park Commons

Lowe's could be open for business in Centrum Properties Inc.'s Wicker Park Commons, between Ashland and Milwaukee, as early as late 2015, replacing Kmart in the 87,000 square feet location (67,000 at ground-level and 20,000 in a lower level).

The spring time table is conditional on Lowe's being able to begin construction, pending permit issuance, says Centrum Vice President Larry Powers. Regardless of starting time, Powers predicts minimal disruption to the shopping center site.

This new tenant will enhance the shopping center's retail mix, bringing a "hardware" store back into the neighborhood, after so many have been lost over the years.

With another 10,000-square-foot space, formerly the Staples location, being taken over by Ulta Beauty, many community residents are pleased to see these type of businesses bringing life back to what was becoming deserted looking large spaces.

Centrum's Wicker Park Commons will continue to have more of the "daily needs" tenant mix, as Powers calls it, than their developments along Division Street. "We’re aiming for more boutique retail and restaurant space on Division.

"We’re excited to sit down with the Wicker Park Committee and other community stakeholders to begin the planning process for the larger Division parcel," he said.

Centrum, whose financial partner is Angelo, Gordon & Co. bought the then West Town Center from Joseph Freed & Assoc. in December 2011. Since then they have renovated the former Wieboldt's Department Store on Milwaukee Ave., enlivening and changing the retail mix along the street.
