Youth who might receive little to nothing this year for Christmas went "Shopping with a Cop," in fact five of them from the 14th District, in Toys R Us on Western Ave. last Sunday.

With Officer Chavez, this young man's expression seems to be one of amazement

"We thought it would be a fun event for young people in the community to participate with the Chicago Police Department in a way they normally don't have the opportunity to do," said Sergeant Felipe Reyes.

Choices

Choosing was not easy for some.

Names of the invited families came from faith based agencies, the Boys and Girls Club and schools. The same dollar amount was spent for each child.

The children were having fun picking out whatever they wanted yet being uncertain that they whole event was real.

In addition to Reyes, the "shopping cops" were Officers Gretchen Chavez, Janashley DeJesus, Andy Matos and Linda Rosales, who is new to the District's Community Policing Office.

Several TV crews were there to cover the event but a store manager barred them from entering, saying that there needed to be approval before they could film within the store. Reyes did a quick interview with Univision and NBC outside the store.
