The plants have arrived at the Wicker Park Field House and are tagged for the annual plant sale put on by the Wicker Park Garden Club to raise funds for the Park Gardens and lecture series. The sale will go on rain or shine. Outside it will be on the west side of the Field House, 1425 N. Damen, and if raining it will be inside the gym on Sat., May 5, and Sun., May 6, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Blooming cactus for inside gardeners

This year an assortment of flowering and non-flowering cacti are a new feature for the sale. Of the more than 3,000 tagged plants ready for purchase, "there is a larger assortment of shade plants this year, since so many Wicker Park gardeners are in need of these type of plants," says Denise Browning, lead purchaser.

In addition there will be many herbs and vegetables for the DIY (do-it-yourself) edible oriented gardeners. Annuals and perennials dominate but there are some shrubs and grasses available.  Several experienced gardeners donate their plants for the sale too. One of the early shopper favorites are Our Urban Times' English Gardener, Richard Tilley's spectacular brugmansia plants.

Between 30 to 40 volunteers from in and outside of Chicago will be available to help shoppers, with experienced gardeners available for any type of gardening advice. With prices between $.99 and about $30, there is something for everyone, with small containers or big yards.

Planning for the event started in January and a crew of four went to the nursery in the last week to place the order. A team of Saturday volunteers made thousand of popsicle stick tags, making processing orders easier. The remaining ingredients required are the shoppers...that would be you!
