Partners Tommy Hawk and Officer Friendly take on Sabin

Tommy Hawk and Officer Friendly greet Sabin winner Debby Zhagui, 8

Lots of shrieks, giggles, screaming, waving of hands always greet Chicago Police Department's (CPD) Officer Friendly in the 14th District, Officer Tom McNamara.

But the decibels cranked up when Tommy Hawk, the National Hockey League's Chicago Blackhawks mascot, ran into a room with poppers popping and silly string shooting from a can.

Giving out a pair of tickets to two students in the 14th District was the reason for Tommy's visit in the 14th District on Wednesday.

As the 150 Officer Friendly trained officers go around the City visiting schools during the year, they ask students to pledge: "To be a good citizen, to help others, to stay safe and to make Chicago a better place."

Those "recruits" receive a sticker and a raffle ticket. Two names are drawn in each district.

This year's 14th District winners were Debby Zhagui at Sabin School, 2216 W Hirsch St, and Vincent Diaz at Pulaski School, 2230 McLean. Each student received two tickets.

Officer Friendly Program
Begun in the 1960s, Chicago is the Officer Friendly Program's home. It is now implemented around the country.

Two years ago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson "revived" the program. This year it is getting even more attention. "The Superintendent has made it clear he wants to build trust through youth engagement," said Deputy Chief Dwayne Betts recently.

Since 2016, the program has engaged over 26,000 kindergarten through second grade students in public and private schools.
