Cold cold weather BUT WickerIce is OPEN

Lorna Cagann, WickerICE logo designer, tests out the ice

Ice skaters rejoice, the Wicker Park ice rink, WickerICE, is open!  and there is no charge for use of this rink.

The rink is a volunteer operation, part of the Wicker Park Advisory Council in partnership with the Chicago Park District. Please respect your fellow skaters.

To show your support and keep your head and ears warm, be sure to purchase a WickerICE hat. They will be on sale on Saturday and Sunday. There are two styles available: light gray with a pom-pom and dark gray without pom-pom. Both are available for $20 each.

All the Cullitons are pleased that there is a second good skate period

While there are no skate rentals thus you must bring your own, the rink will be open until 9 p.m. Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.  The Wicker Park Field House is the "warming room" and where the restrooms are located. Because of the Friday and Monday holidays will close at 2 p.m., those facilities will NOT be available after that time. Other days, the Field House will be open until 9 p.m.

Hockey enthusiast Kris Von Dopek "checks" the ice

This is the Thursday schedule:

  • 8 - 9 p.m. Rat Hockey*

Friday and Monday will be a whole day of skating for everyone from 9 a.m to 9 p.m.

On Saturday and Sunday the schedule is:

  • 7 - 9 a.m. Stick and Puck**
  • 9 - 7 p.m. Open Skate All ages
  • 7 - 8 p.m. Open Skate Adults
  • 8 - 9 p.m. Rat Hockey*
NOTE: To play hockey on WickerIce, a waiver must be filled out. The waiver may be accessed here.
Brian Culliton, co-chair of WickerICE, encourages people to volunteer for this weekend.
By the end of this five day span of skating days, Culliton is happy that that will result in about a two week skating season, considering the El Nino weather pattern being experienced here this year. "Normally a winter season should be 30," he explains. "But, considering we are having a good first year."
*Rat Hockey refers to hockey pickup games
**Stick and Puck is time for people of all ages to practice their stick skills
