Festive fun from The 606 to Division this weekend
From Division to Bloomingdale, there will be an explosion of activities this weekend in parts of East Village, Wicker Park, Bucktown, Logan Square and Humboldt Park.
The Do Division Street Fest and Sidewalk Sale begins at 5 p.m. Friday and will go until 10 p.m., then from noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. It covers 10 city blocks, on Division Street from Ashland to Leavitt.
The 606 Block Party
With fun activities from one end of the Bloomingdale Trail to the other, kids of all ages can look forward to two music stages plus another devoted to school bands.
The Xfinity and Northwestern Medicine stages will feature Vocalo and Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center while the other will have hips moving to summerDance-style programming. School bands will be featured on the Boeing Stage at Churchill Field Park.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., pop-up performance experiences along the Trail will include aerial demonstrations at Damen Arts Plaza, Tango y Folklore at St. Louis and roving musical stage between Milwaukee/Leavitt and Humboldt.
Family recess and circus arts will be in full swing at at Walsh Park, while the musically included can create their own serenades at Park 567 (Milwaukee/Leavitt). The Chicago Park District’s Kidsmobile will be at Julia de Burgos and The 606 resident astronomer will be at the Exelon Observatory.
From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., 30 booths will have hands-on experiences waiting as well as a bicycle village along Humboldt Blvd. where everything begins between Wabansia and Cortland.
The magic of light will begin at 6:30 p.m. when celebrants can make illuminated objects with Opera-Matic, Theater Oobleck and others until 8 p.m.
Then everyone can join in to create an Illumination Procession along the Bloomingdale Trail. Bells, whistles and bling are encouraged. Everyone may choose their own starting point and time. The goal is to have everyone at the festival on Humboldt Boulevard to enjoy food, music and 30 booths with hands-on activities.
When the concept of adding public space in the Logan Square area surfaced in 2003, few ever dreamed that 13 years later there would be a first anniversary for a system of parks along an old railroad bed turned recreational trail. But thanks to thousands, that is the reality that will be celebrated Saturday. Be sure to be part of it!
