Meet Smith Park's new "sheriff": David Ramos
David Ramos is the new Advisory Council (SPAC) President at Smith Park, 2526 W. Grand Ave., who says that he is "the new sheriff in town." Actually that is half true.
He is a 20-year Chicago Police Department officer, though not a sheriff. But, he isn't new to the area.
Actively involved in community activities for years, he served as President of the Chicago Grand Neighbors Association (CGNA) from 2007 to 2009.
He sees Smith Park as a place for all ages to enjoy programming and have space. Space for activity and space for passive experiences.
With praise for Park Supervisor Travis Bogle, Ramos said that he wants to look more closely at the budget and find ways to bring in more balanced programming for youth and seniors.
“Aside from the Boys and Girls Club, the Chicago Park District is the only outlet left for children to attend classes and events after school, to grow, and to develop their leadership skills for the future," said Ramos.
Having several friends who are certified music teachers, he is looking at the possibility of bringing them in as Park Partners to do things like give piano lessons, which would address both populations.
His five-member council is planning on an active summer. Aside from having one of the Chicago Park District pools, they are looking forward to a July 22 Movie in the Park - Ghost Busters. "We thought that would be a nice way to honor a long time Chicagoan, Harold Ramis, who passed away this year," said Ramos.
"To make it easier for people to get things done while having fun, we will be a Secretary of State's satellite office on Sat., July 26, at 10 a.m.," he announces. A mobile unit brings government services, such as obtaining state ids, to the people.
SPAC's next frontier is to bring a Farmer's Market to the Park. In fact they are in the processing phase with the City for a Farm Fresh market.
Erich Muellner, Past President of SPAC, stated, “We are very happy and delighted to have David Ramos as the new president. We are very confident in David’s leadership skills and his ability to get things done. He has demonstrated those abilities in the community and in his profession. In addition, he has been a parent at Smith Park for over 20 years," said Muellner.
Ramos encourages people to volunteer or get their community service hour credits in the Park. He requests that those interested contact the Smith Park Advisory Council via or visit the SPAC website.
